St Louis to Sioux Falls, South Dakota

This is the second day. I drove from St Louis to Sioux Falls in about 11 hours. It took a while because I stopped in Kansas City, Omaha, and Sioux City on the way.

After passing through Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa and South Dakota I realized that the USA is full of corn, a LOT of corn. Though this leg of the journey was flat and fairly similar in appearance, it was beautiful. I never thought corn would do that to me.

After some deliberation with two trusted friends in D.C. I decided to name the VW "Loretta." Loretta and I have come a long way together, but I don't think she realizes that I'm leaving her once we get to Montana. I'm sure there is a country song about this somewhere.

Anyway, here is what I saw today.

Here is the first leg. Not much to see here. I drove from Knoxville to St Louis taking 9.5 hours with a food stop in Nashville to see Andrea. Today is St Louis - Kansas City - north - South Dakota, etc. More interesting photos will be made today.

I was the stand in for a recent photo shoot at Thompson-Boling Arena. Yes, those are eight national championship trophies and no I am not Pat Summitt. Picture coach standing there in an orange blazer and you'll have an idea of the real thing.

Leica M8 Test #2

Here are two from the Leica M8 and the 35mm summilux (f1.4). Of course, they are of my roommate's surrogate dog, but nonetheless, the black and white in-camera feature is kindof cool.

The M8 is a great camera. Considering that I've only been exposed (sorry for the pun) to Canon and Nikon DSLR's, I wasn't really sure how to handle the rangefinder. After some test shots around the house, I quickly became comfortable with the small body and super quiet shutter. Anything above normal conversation level or light traffic renders the shutter completely silent. The focus is tack sharp no matter the lighting situation (unless you are a dummy like me and take hail mary shots of dogs all the time, then the focus is a little off).

There are some sharpening and saturation options that you can perform in-camera like my Canon 5D. I'm not a huge fan of this feature and normally wouldn't use it, but if you were going for a certain look with your photos, then this option would come in handy.

My only issue with the camera is the somewhat limited battery life and the eternity that it takes to format the SD memory cards. Other than that, if I had the money to blow on not only the M8 body, but the glass, I would do so in a heartbeat. Christmas list anyone?

These photos (including the photos in the previous post) are just examples of what the camera can do. I have more PJ style photos that I shot with the camera, but they are part of an ongoing project and I will have to post them later.

Leica M8 Test

Here are some shots that I took at the Dogwood Arts Festival on Market Square with a borrowed Leica M8 and a 35mm summilux. These are just examples... nothing artsy or photojournalistic. There is a little bit of in-camera sharpening and saturation going on. Otherwise I only made minor changes in CS3. I'll post some others soon.

The Knoxville Pearl

I recently visited the glorious cereal bar known as the Knoxville Pearl with some friends. The Pearl is located in the Old City a door or two down from the Pilot Light. Should one have a hankering for Count Chocula on a Friday night when the stores are closed, this all you can eat for $5 cereal bar is where it's at. Also, the atmosphere makes for some nice camera fodder.
